Ranked fourth in land mass and fifth in population compared
to the other continents, South America has a rather interesting
history. For many years it was isolated from Europe and the rest
of the "known world." From the 15th century on, South America
became a place for many in
Europe to "lay claim to" and enjoy
the riches. There were cultures already on the continent,
however. And over hundreds of years they have changed to the
nations we have today.
Brazil
The largest population and land mass of all the countries in
South America, Brazil is a place that many love to travel to for
vacation, especially Rio De Janeiro. With a dazzling display of
natural beauty, plenty of beaches, and one of the most
multi-cultural cultures in the world, Brazil is one of the most
exciting destinations in South America. If you're looking for
something multi-cultural, Brazil offers it.
Colombia
This is certainly not the first place people think of when they
think of traveling to South America, but there are plenty of
things to see in this in Columbia. While it's not as safe as some
other South American countries, some people do enjoy coming to
Colombia to get away and remind themselves how good they
have it. In all seriousness, tourism has increased recently,
with more and more people traveling here as warnings and travel
restrictions are lifted. There are many wonderful natural and
manmade wonders to see in this country.
Argentina
The second largest country in South America, Argentina has
become a very popular destination over the years. While the
country had a rough time of it during the last half of the 20th
century, they have begun to make a comeback to being the world's
10th most wealthy nation. With a well educated population,
plenty of things to see and do, and a culture that is different,
many people enjoy coming to
Argentina for vacation.
Peru
At one time, Peru was home to the Inca empire. Today, the area
is visited by many who come to see the ancient ruins. In the
latter half of the 20th century, especially the 1990s,
Peru
began actively promoting tourism in the country. It's one of the
rapid growth sectors in Peru. In fact, Peru is quickly becoming
one of the most visited countries in South America.
Venezuela
Primarily comprised of territory on the mainland, Venezuela also
consists of many islands off the coast of Northern South
America. The culture has been heavily influenced by all things
Caribbean. While the country has gone through troubling times,
the amount of oil in
Venezuela has led to them becoming one of
the richest countries in South America. While not always thought
of first when planning a trip, Venezuela has a lot to offer.
Chile
Located on a long strip on the Western coast of South America,
Chile is similar to other South American countries in that it
has experienced tremendous growth in the tourism industry. From
the natural beauty of the land to the many beaches, Chile has
become a favorite destination for many people. Easter Island is
one of the big draws to the area, with many people stopping by
to see the ancient, giant heads.
South America
There are other countries in South America, but the ones
mentioned are the largest. The others, including Paraguay,
Uruguay, Guyana and Suriname may still be places you want to go,
but the countries mentioned (except for Colombia perhaps) are
more well known for their tourism industries, at least when it
comes to South America. Whatever you decide, this continent
offers many things to see and do, no matter what type of
traveler you are.
